The incidence of Anxiety Disorders in the United States
has tripled in the past four years. There are various types of anxiety
disorders ranging from feeling nervous all the time to having an extreme
fear of a specific situation or thing. While Anxiety Disorders can be
debilitating and scary, they are easily treated. We have high success
rates at helping clients with Anxiety Disorders regain normalcy in their
lives in a short period of time.
Anxiety Disorders occur when someone feels anxious or terrified without
a specific reason for feeling this way. Someone might begin to avoid
certain activities and situations as a way to limit the anxiety. Others
may become paralyzed and unable to complete basic life tasks.
Anxiety Disorders are estimated to affect more than 20 million Americans
every year. This means that approximately 1 in every 9 Americans will
develop an Anxiety Disorder at some time. There are various types
of Anxiety Disorders, ranging from those around specific situations
to a constant general feeling of anxiety. Specific types of Anxiety
Disorders are:
Generalized Anxiety Disorder- excessive worry about
several everyday events, difficult to control and causes problems
in everyday functioning
Social Anxiety- an extreme nervousness when in social
situations, especially with unfamiliar people, which may result in
avoidance of social situations or relationships
Panic Attacks- episodes begin abruptly, peak within
10 minutes Symptoms include: rapid heart rate, sweating, shortness
of breath, chest pain, dizziness, tightness in throat
Phobias- exaggerated, involuntary, and irrational fears
of particular situations or things
Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder- characterized by persistently
intrusive and inappropriate thoughts, images that run through someone's
mind and/or repetitive behaviors that one feels they must do. Occurs
for more than one hour daily and interferes with someone's life.
Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder- continue to re-experience
traumatic event through nightmares, hallucinations, or flashbacks,
avoid all things associated with the event, heightened sense of alertness,
difficulty concentrating.
