What to Expect from Therapy
The therapy style at Brandt Therapy Clinics is to approach
the session as a coach or consultant for clients. While the therapist
bring expertise on change and various issues to the sessions, we also
believe that each client is an expert on herself or himself. Clients
are the experts on their situation, while the therapist has expertise
in asking the questions that get clients "unstuck".
We also educate clients about issues they are dealing with and help
them apply this knowledge to their specific situation.
While some time in the session will focus on discussing the problem,
we spend the majority of the time talking about solutions. We focus
on what is happening in the present rather than spending time talking
about the past, unless it is directly relevant. In addition, homework
assignments are generally given during each session so you can continue
to work even when not in a session. These assignments may consist
of writing down ideas or simply noticing certain behaviors that happen
during the week. This allows clients to work on developing new skills
when not in the therapy room so they are able to reach their goal
substantially more quickly than with traditional therapy techniques.
We set clear goals in the first couple sessions and will be monitoring
our progress toward those goals on a regular basis.
Because the therapist and client work as a team, we make decisions
about the therapy process together. Issues which are often discussed
include how often to meet for sessions, who should attend sessions,
and progress towards therapy goals.
Sessions start on the hour and go for 50 minutes. The first session
involves filling out paperwork and conducting an assessment of the
problem. In the next couple of sessions, we continue to gather information
and help the client set clear, specific goals. Sessions will then
focus on specific steps toward meeting those goals.
